How to Choose the Right Area Rug Size for Your Naples Condo or Great Room
October 8, 2026

You have found area rugs Naples FL shoppers rave about. The color is right, the pattern works with your furniture, and the texture feels exactly the way you imagined. Then you look at the size options and the confidence dissolves—because nothing in the standard lineup seems to fit the room you have in mind.
This is one of the most common moments in our Naples showroom. And it is almost never the rug’s fault. It is almost always the sizing.
Rug sizing is one of those decisions that looks simple until you are standing in the middle of a 400-square-foot great room in a Pelican Bay high-rise wondering why the 8×10 that looked huge in the store now looks like a postage stamp on the floor. Getting the size right—or knowing when to go custom—is the difference between a room that feels pulled together and one that feels unfinished no matter how good everything else looks.
Here is how our rug specialists approach it.
Why Open Floor Plans in Naples Change Everything
Standard rug sizing guides were written for traditional room layouts—a defined living room, a separate dining room, walls that tell you where one space ends and another begins. Naples homes, particularly condos in Pelican Bay, Park Shore, and the Moorings, rarely work that way.
The dominant floor plan in Southwest Florida’s mid-to-high-rise condo market is open and continuous. The kitchen flows into the dining area, which flows into the living space, which opens onto a lanai. From a design standpoint, this is beautiful. From a rug sizing standpoint, it creates a real challenge: without walls defining zones, the rug has to do it.
This means the rug in a Naples open-plan condo is doing more work than it would in a traditional layout. It is not just an accent—it is the architectural device that tells anyone walking into the room where the seating area begins and ends. A rug that is too small for that job leaves the furniture looking like it is floating, unanchored, in the middle of a large continuous space.
The same challenge applies to single-family homes in Vineyards, Naples Park, and Lely Resort, where great rooms frequently run 30 feet or longer without a visual break. In these spaces, the instinct to buy a standard 8×10 or 9×12 almost always produces a rug that disappears. The Two Approaches That Work
There are two reliable ways to size a rug for an open floor plan. Which one is right for you depends on your furniture arrangement and how you want the space to feel.
All legs on.
In a living room seating arrangement, this means every sofa and chair leg sits on the rug. The rug fully defines the conversation zone and creates a clear, grounded feeling. This approach requires a larger rug—often a 9×12, 10×14, or larger in a Naples great room—and it is the more formal of the two options. It reads as deliberate and complete.
Front legs on.
This is the more commonly used approach in larger rooms. The front legs of each sofa and chair rest on the rug, while the back legs sit on the hard floor. The rug still unifies the seating group visually, but it can be smaller—typically one standard size down from the all-legs-on option. It is a flexible approach that works well in open plans where the seating area blends into other zones.
What never works.
Having no legs on the rug at all. A rug floating in the center of a room with all the furniture sitting entirely off it reads as an afterthought—and it is the single most common sizing mistake our team sees in Naples homes.

Sizing for Dining Rooms and Dining Zones
The dining area is the one space where sizing has a more precise formula—and where getting it wrong creates a functional problem, not just an aesthetic one.
The rule is this: the rug needs to be large enough that dining chairs remain on the rug even when pulled back from the table. The standard recommendation is 18 to 24 inches of rug beyond the table edge on all sides—enough that no one scrapes the chair back onto hard floor every time they sit down or stand up.
For a 60-inch round table, a rug of at least 8 to 9 feet in diameter is typically needed. For a rectangular table seating six to eight, a 9×12 is usually the minimum—and many Naples dining rooms, especially in open-plan condos, need a 10×14 to do the job properly.
In open-plan condos where the dining area is defined not by walls but by context, a generously sized dining rug also serves as the visual anchor for that zone of the room. Undersizing it leaves the dining space looking like it is bleeding into the living area, which undermines the whole open-plan layout.
When Nothing in Stock Fits: The Custom Option
Even with 8,000 area rugs in stock in our Naples showroom, there are rooms where no standard size is right. An irregular great room, a narrow hallway that needs a runner in an unusual width, an entry hall in an unusual shape or dimension, a lanai with angles that standard rectangles won’t cover—these situations are not uncommon, and they are not a dead end.
Hadinger Flooring offers custom rug sizing, cutting, and binding. We can take a broadloom or area rug material and fabricate it to virtually any dimension you need. The edges are bound cleanly so the finished rug looks intentional rather than improvised.
One customer in Naples came to us needing a round rug for a speaker event backdrop—a size she could not find anywhere online or in town. We cut a 9×12 to her exact round dimensions, bound the edges, and it worked perfectly. She still uses it in her office today.
If your room is asking for a size that does not exist in the standard lineup, bring your dimensions and we will show you what is possible.

Before You Buy: The Tools That Help
Two things will save you from the most common sizing mistake: a tape measure and your phone.
Before visiting our showroom—or any time you want to test a size before committing—tape out the rug footprint on your floor using painter’s tape. This takes about five minutes and immediately shows you whether a size that looks right on paper actually works in the room. Most people who do this discover they need to go up at least one size from what they originally planned.
You can also use our Roomvo Inspire tool at hadingerflooring.com before your visit. Upload a photo of your room and you can preview how different rug sizes, patterns, and colors look in your actual space before you ever leave home. It is especially useful for Naples snowbirds who want to plan their selections before arriving for the season.
When you do visit, bring the room dimensions—length, width, and the location of major furniture pieces—and our rug specialists will help you narrow the field from 8,000 options to the three or four that actually work for your specific room.
What customers say:
Gail P. was great in helping us get the right look for our living room. We showed her a few pictures of our living room furniture and she was able to help us find the right area rug to pull it all together. Look forward to working with her again on our entry and dining areas.
Niyani S., Naples
The most common thing we hear from customers after they get their rug home is that they wish they had gone one size larger. If you are between two sizes, go up. In a Naples open floor plan, you almost never regret choosing the larger rug.

Frequently Asked Questions
What size area rug do I need for a Naples open-plan living room?
Most Naples open-plan great rooms need a rug larger than the standard 8×10. In a typical open-floor-plan condo or single-family home, a 9×12 is often the minimum that looks proportionate, and many larger rooms require a 10×14 or larger. The key is that the rug should be large enough to anchor all or most of the furniture in the seating arrangement—not just sit underneath the coffee table.
Is it better to have all furniture legs on the rug, or just the front legs?
Both approaches work—the right choice depends on your room size and the look you want. All legs on creates a more formal, fully defined zone and requires a larger rug. Front legs on is more common in open plans and allows a slightly smaller rug while still visually unifying the seating group. What does not work is having no furniture legs on the rug at all.
What size rug do I need for a dining room in a Naples condo?
Your dining rug should extend 18 to 24 inches beyond the table on all sides, so chairs remain on the rug even when pulled back. For a 60-inch round table, a rug of at least 8 to 9 feet in diameter is typically needed. For a rectangular table seating six to eight, a 9×12 is the minimum—many Naples dining rooms need a 10×14.
What if I need a rug size that is not available in standard dimensions?
Hadinger Flooring offers custom rug cutting and binding. We can fabricate a rug to virtually any dimension from broadloom or area rug material, with cleanly finished edges. Bring your dimensions to our showroom at 6401 Airport Pulling Rd N in Naples and we will show you what is possible from our in-stock inventory and special-order options.
Does Hadinger Flooring include a rug pad with rug purchases?
Yes—Hadinger Flooring includes a free deluxe rug pad with every area rug purchase at our Naples location. A quality rug pad prevents slipping, protects your hard floors, adds cushioning underfoot, and extends the life of the rug itself.
